Abstract
Macao, a Chinese administrative region with a rich history of Portuguese influence, naturally operates its media in Chinese and Portuguese languages. However, the presence of English media, albeit more minor in scale compared to other languages, serves the English-speaking communities in Macao, including foreign migrants and immigrants. While extensive research has been conducted on the societal impact of media, there needs to be a more significant gap in understanding how English media influences the culturally diverse landscape of Macao under its current regime. As Macao will soon celebrate the 25th anniversary of its return to China in 1999, it is an opportune time to delve into the region’s media development throughout the years. This paper explores the connection between the media’s contribution to Macao’s development and the freedom of the press. By examining the role of English media in Macao, we can gain insights into the dynamics of a multilingual media environment and its implications for the region’s cultural and social fabric.
